Donation from the Eggert Family will establish an endowment for Meristem at the Sacramento Region Community Foundation to advance opportunities for neurodiverse young people.
Fair Oaks, CA – Today, Meristem, a multi-year transitional program dedicated to supporting young adults with autism and other neurodiversity, announced a $1 million matching donation pledge from the Eggert Family to establish an endowment that will support the long-term sustainability of the program. The donation and dollar-for-dollar matching challenge is a testament to the impact that Meristem has had on the life of the Eggert family, particularly their daughter, Caroline, who attended the program.
“Meristem changed our daughter Caroline’s life. With your help, Meristem will change the lives of other young adults, right here in our own local community.” said Pam and Steve Eggert.
Autism affects an estimated 1 in 36 young people. Autistic adults are also significantly underrepresented in the workforce due to stigma and other factors.
Meristem was founded in 2015 to help close critical gaps young adults face after high school. Meristem’s program is based on a European model that incorporates methods like movement, crafting, and building a connection to the land. Participants ultimately build a strong sense of self, develop an enhanced social capacity, and receive vocational training tailored to their interests.
“We are profoundly grateful to the Eggert Family for their generosity and belief in the mission of Meristem,” said Erin Schirm, Executive Director at Meristem. “Their transformative gift will play a pivotal role to expand and enhance the program’s capabilities, ensuring that more young adults can benefit from Meristem’s holistic approach to education and life skills development.”
The donation will establish an endowment at the Sacramento Region Community Foundation. Organizers hope to collectively raise $2 million for the fund over the next four years, with the Eggerts matching dollar-for-dollar donations made to the fund. Proceeds will be directed toward the greatest needs of the program, including updates of Meristem’s facilities and the development of new educational and vocational programs.
